Michiel Deijmann – Singer Dutch Ska Band Downbeat Detonators
Michiel Deijmann is the frontman and singer of the Dutch Ska band Downbeat Detonators. He brings years of experience, passion and dedication to ska, rocksteady and early reggae. His distinctive voice, rhythmic guitar playing and energetic stage presence drive the band’s powerful live shows.
The Downbeat Detonators draw heavily from the classic Jamaican sounds of the 1960s and 1970s. Their music blends infectious rhythms, rich vocal harmonies, powerful horn sections and soulful grooves. As frontman, Michiel brings these elements together and connects the band with its audience. The result is what they call a “Rocksteady Rebel Soul Party.”

Michiel’s musical journey started long before he became the singer of the Downbeat Detonators. He co-founded and fronted the Rotterdam Ska Jazz Foundation, rooted in Rotterdam’s vibrant ska and reggae scene. He also co-founded and fronted the Phoenix City Retaliators, where he further developed his passion for authentic Jamaican music.

For Michiel, ska and rocksteady are more than a link to the past. They are living musical traditions filled with rhythm, soul and social energy. His guitar adds a strong rhythmic foundation, while his vocals give the songs their character. He is also an accomplished songwriter. He is credited for instance as the composer of “The Wicked Man Must Come Down,” released by Downbeat Detonators on the album Reggae Boomshot.
